Getting visitors to your website can seem like a tough job, but it is possible to turn an internet backwater into a go to site.
Here are a few ways to get visitors to your website. Each method has its own pros and cons.
1. Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is my favorite method of getting traffic.
It involves setting up your website so search engines can find you and so that search engines know what your website is about. Unfortunately, most web designers either do it wrong, or not at all.
The big advantage to SEO is that it gives you free traffic.
There is a certain amount of effort in setting up your website for SEO. And it doesn’t end there. You need other websites to link to yours. Some links are much better than others, which is also a consideration.
Some terms are very hard to rank for because there is so much competition by website operators who really know what they’re doing.
It can take a while for your website to appear in search results. You need a combination of correct SEO techniques and patience. The waiting does pay off though.
Many terms that are perfectly suited to your business may be much less competitive, meaning you have a good chance for ranking on page 1 of Google for search terms that matter.
People tend to trust websites more if they find them in search results than if they find them in advertisements.
2. Pay Per Click
Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising means that you write ads that appear on other websites. When someone clicks on the ad, they are brought to your website. You pay for each visitor.
This is a fast way to get traffic.
It is can also be a fast way to spend money. Before embarking on a PPC campaign, you need to make sure that your website is designed properly to make the best use of your visitors. In other words, your website must be designed for conversion.
I suggest you apply good SEO principles to your website before paying for PPC. This will improve ad performance and reduce costs in many cases.
3. Comment On Blogs and Forums
If you know where on the internet your customers hang out, then you can hang out there too, and offer free advice.
Most website owners frown upon directly advertising your company in comments. I do. So do include a link to your site in the comment field supplied for that purpose. On a forum, include a link to your site in your signature. Do not leave long comments about how great your company is and where to find it. No one will read such comments, and often such comments will not even be published.
